Description:

The new generation of singer Dominik Werner, who is gaining popularity in Japan, has been visiting Japan more and more through guest appearances at the Bach Collegium Japan. In this new recording by Zefiro, led by Alfredo Bernardini, a world-famous baroque oboe singer, Dominique Werner faces Bach's solo cantatas head-on. Except for the bass continuo, each part is played by one person. The three solo cantatas at the center of the selection include arias in which solo or multiple oboes add beautiful sounds, and several similar arias are excerpted from other cantatas. In addition to the two classic masterpieces (BWV 56 and 82) from a few years after Bach became choir director at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, when he was developing his fullest sense of composition, the "Bach's Shortest Church Cantata" BWV 158, a mystery from the date of composition, and various other arias in different styles, are also fascinating because of their extremely small size. The sound production, which can be conveyed because of the extremely small size of the orchestra, is appealing. The beautiful sounds of Bernardini and the Grazzi brothers on baroque oboe and bassoon are layered with the virtuosity of Olivia Centurioni on violin under Chiara Banchini and Gaetano Najillo on cello, as well as a string soloist lineup. The interpretation is based on an ever-changing understanding of Bach, and Professor Volney's commentary is not to be missed. Naxos Japan
