Peridot is a variety of Forsterite and is also known as Olivine.  It is the birthstone for August and the Zodiac sign Libra.

It is one of the earliest recorded gemstones to be mined, dating back to 1500 BC.

Peridot has been included in jewellery since ancient times, especially among the ancient Egyptians who knew it as the Gem of the Sun.  The Egyptians believed that it had healing powers and could ward off evil spirits.

The Romans also prized Peridot for its beauty and thought it could bring good luck. 

Today, it is associated with prosperity, manifestation, dedication, leadership, self-actualization, good luck, and good fortune.

In the Middle Ages, Peridot was used to decorate religious artifacts, as many thought this crystal had magical properties.
