The Empire State Building has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The building located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th street was given its name in honor of the nickname for New York State. Standing at 1,453 feet 8 9/16 inches tall, with 102 floors and a 203 foot pinnacle, which is covered by broadcast antennas and topped with a lightning rod., the empire State Building was the world's tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until the completion of the World Trade Center's North Tower in 1972. The Empire State Building is currently the second tallest skyscraper in the Americas, surpassed by only the Willis Tower, formerly the Sears Tower.
The Empire State Bulding has both an indoor and outdoor observation deck located on the 86th floor, as well as an observatory located on the 102nd floor which to date has been visited by over 110 million people.
