The 628th Tank Battalion, originally formed as the 28th Infantry Division Provisional Antitank Battalion, was a significant unit during World War II. It was redesignated as the 628th Tank Destroyer Battalion on December 15, 1941, and played a crucial role in the Normandy landings and the subsequent Allied campaigns. The battalion was involved in various operations, including the envelopment of the Falaise Pocket and the assault on the Siegfried Line. It was later converted to M36 tank destroyers and continued its operations in the Hürtgen Forest and the Aachen sector. The battalion was deactivated on November 14, 1945, marking the end of its active service.
